I think that is how the voting machine in Florida works.

Teens may be too stupid to drive, but it’s not because they don’t know how to use a transmission that they quite possibly have never even seen in real life. Why, with only a few years of driving experience would you expect someone to learn to drive a car they don’t have access to?
To make things clear, manual transmissions account for 2% of cars sold in the US in 2018, and while those numbers were higher in the past, I’m pretty sure it’s been around a decade since we were over 5%. And those cars are not evenly distributed, people want manuals in their sports cars, but very few want them in the type of family car that ends up getting driven by most teens.

How on earth did anyone remember that shift pattern?
I'm sure I couldn't do it, even with the sticker.

The 4 -> 5 and 8->9 shifts seem particularly brutal.

All the shifts going across 12, and ofcourse you need to double clutch and revmatch for each...

This is why I don’t even bother locking my Cherokee. Theres nothing in there to steal, and if you can actually drive stick then I guess you can have it.

it’s fake, IIRC; it’s a “The Fast and the Furious” joke.

and back in the day when manuals were still called “standard transmission” people bought manuals because they were cheaper, less fragile, and got better gas mileage than automatics. Not because they necessarily wanted to shift for themselves. For a rather long time you had to choose between a non-overdrive 3 speed auto, or a 5-speed manual with overdrive. the difference in gas mileage could be double-digit in that case.
ever since automatics reached forward gear parity with manuals, it was game over for the stick. esp. so now that autos have more forward gear ratios. Manuals are pretty much capped at 7 gears, unless you get into those massive double-countershaft boxes in heavy trucks. and even then, more and more heavy trucks are offering automatics. both AMTs and planetary autos.
oh, and since planetary gearsets can be made incredibly strong, the input torque capacity of automatics has outstripped manuals. a single countershaft manual is not going to be able to cope with more than about 700 lb-ft of input torque, partially because of their parallel-gearshaft design. in a parallel-shaft setup, as you apply torque to the gearset, they try harder and harder to push each other apart. Planetary gears are contained within the ring gear and can’t push each other apart.

with that on top.

Surveys will tell you how the majority of drivers believe they have above average driving skills.
The rest of them apparently all live in my town.
